In 2012, there was only one distillery producing gin in Wales. There are now dozens. They are winning awards. They use local botanicals. They make their drinks with passion. Yes, Welsh Gin is here!
Gin is the drink of choice for people who are tired of boring wine and feel bloated from drinking too many gassy beers. Gin is great with a glass of ice in summer, but it can also be enjoyed in winter if you feel the need.
Subtly-flavoured gin and tonics have also grown in popularity. A gin or tonic is no longer considered bland.
No one can say that Welsh gins are bland. The vast array of premium and flavoured gins created by Welsh craft distilleries range from seaweed botanicals to marmalade flavors.
We’ll be looking at 10 Welsh Gins, from all over the country. Let’s have a glass of wine, some ice, and a slice and then let’s take a look at the menu.
Aber Falls Orange Marmalade Gin
This gin is a winner because it combines citrus flavours with piney juniper. Orange Marmalade, a gin made from filtered Welsh water and brewed in the Snowdonia foothills, is one of many gins that Aber Falls, a North Wales-based distillery produces.
Dyfi Pollination Gin
Dyfi Pollination Welsh Gin is made using the London Dry method, which is only available in small quantities. It has a mild herbal flavor with a minty finish. This award-winner is distinguished by the local flora that was foraged for its botanicals. Dyfi estuary has been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Snowdonia Welsh Dry Gin
This tiny drop of Snowdonia Distillery features plum and citrus botanicals, as well as juniper and a little bit of earthy spice. Add a thin twist of lemon peel to the glass and serve with tonic water or in a refreshing cocktail. After a Welsh legend, the copper distillation pot is called Afanc.
Eccentric Cardiff Dry
In honour of the capital of the country, this spirit was created. This dry, sharp gin has a juniper forward and has a strong citrus character. It is best enjoyed with mint & pepper. Eccentric has been making gins in Llantrisant, near Cardiff, for over 200 years.
Penderyn Brecon Special Reserve
Penderyn, one of the largest and oldest distilleries in Wales is perhaps most famous for its whiskies. This award-winning tipple is crisp, clean, and smooth. It uses botanicals from all four corners of the globe. These botanicals are paired with barley spirit, and water from the nearby Brecon Beacons.
pHure Smooth Conwy Gin
Smooth Conwy is made with 96 percent organic wheat grain alcohol. The gin is diluted with soft-filtered Welsh water, and then used to extract the juniper berries as well as eight other complementary botanicals. This is what gives the gin its smooth flavor. Gin is also distilled at lower pressure to conserve energy.
Da Mhile – Seaweed Gin
Do not let the name or the ingredients fool you! This organic seaweed-infused gin, pronounced davee-lay (which in Gaelic means 2000), is the perfect drink to go with seafood dishes. This gin is made with seaweed from Cardigan Bay. It has fresh citrus and lavender flavors. Give it a shot!
LlanfairPGin
This hand-crafted small batch gin is not for sale because it doesn’t need to be called the longest place name. Enjoy Juniper punch, notes of elderflower and angelica root, as well as rosemary and mint, all from the Isle of Anglesey.
Henstone Dry Gin
Henstone Dry, a 2020 winner, boasts juniper and coriander, angelswreath, cardamoms, orris root, citrus fruit botanicals, and cardamom. This gin is made in Oswestry’s border country and has a balanced, warming, and smooth taste.
Crawshay Orange Zest Gin
Crawshay Orange zest’s eye-catching bottle is a sign of what you can expect. The subtle aroma of chocolate orange will reward you. The Hensol Distillery, South Wales, produces this elegantly flavoured Gin. It is a refined spirit that shows restraint. It gains a refreshing smoothness thanks to the Brazilian oranges.
