When is the best time of year to have work done to my trees and hedges?

It is advised that tree surgery be carried out before a tree falls and before they burst. This is however not true for all species. We will give you a written recommendation and report for your trees and hedges.

It is suggested that trees be worked on after the leaves have fallen and before the bud burst. This is not true for all species. Therefore, we prefer to examine each tree individually and provide a written report with recommendations for when to perform the necessary work. Cherry, Plum and related tree (Prunus species), are examples of trees that need to be worked at other times. These trees need to be pruned as soon as they flower to avoid bacterial infection. Maple and Birch should be avoided in spring because they can bleed (exude sap), which while not dangerous, can make a mess. Magnolia and Walnut should be trimmed in high-summer. Although most common species of hedges can still be cut at any time, we would recommend checking with the owner and weighing the environmental impact on nesting birds and other wildlife before you begin.

The rule of thumb is that a tree’s roots extend as far underground as the canopy it covers. It is possible for this to be altered by frequent or severe pruning. However, it is usually possible to manage the root system underground by regularly pruning back or reducing the canopy. A tree does not need energy to develop its root system if there is not a large canopy above it.

Do I need permission for work to be done on my trees?

Tree Preservation Orders can be very important when planning tree works in South-West London. There is a lot of conservation areas. You could face a huge fine if the permission is not obtained. It is simple to determine if your property falls within a conservation zone or if Tree Preservation Orders apply. These can sometimes be checked online with relevant local authorities. These searches can be done by us if you prefer.

The 1990 Town and Country Planning Act makes provision for trees in conservation areas that aren’t the subject of a TPO. Each conservation area is covered by a blanket order. It covers all trees that have a central stem diameter greater than 7.5cm and 1.5m above the ground. This does not apply to shrubs or hedges.
How to Get Permission for a Tree to be Removed

A notice under section 211 is required for anyone proposing to reduce or work on a tree within a conservation area. This is required to allow the LPA to review the proposed work and decide whether a TPO should occur. Conservation areas are those areas of architectural or historical significance that the LPA considers to be of particular architectural or historical value. They include areas that can be preserved or enhanced in order to maintain or enhance their unique character. LPAs are responsible for identifying them. They often center around listed buildings, but not always. A conservation area may also have other landscape features and buildings that contribute to its special character. Trees exempted form TPOs include those that are dying, dangerous, or in danger, as well as fruit trees grown for commercial production. You may need to give notice within five days. However, it is important that you plan ahead. TPOs prohibit the removal, uprooting and crown lifting of trees without consent.

Professional tree surgeons will not ignore the legislation. A conservation area application is not a request for permission, but merely a notification. Trees in congested areas may have a high value or be affected by removal, pruning/reduction or other measures. Councils believe it is appropriate that everyone has the opportunity to be informed about their impact. The consultation process usually takes 6 weeks from when the application was received.

These applications can be completed for free, and most professional tree-surgeon companies won’t charge customers for managing and completing them.

Why should I hire a tree-surgeon?

Tree surgery is a dangerous and skilled occupation that requires extensive training and access expensive equipment. If trees are not properly cut, they can pose a problem in the future.
