DBS checks are official records that show criminal convictions. They are used to verify that employers are making good hiring decisions.
DBS checks are crucial in finding candidates for vulnerable groups such as children. Employers can request to see the DBS certificate of a candidate after they have completed the check and make a decision about the next steps.
What does DBS mean?
DBS is an acronym that stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. It is sponsored by Home Office and “an executive non-departmental, public body.”
The service is responsible to process and issue checks that enable recruiters to make more informed decisions about whom they work with. It was previously known by the Criminal Records Bureau, (CRB).
Types and types of DBS checks
There are three levels for DBS checks: Basic, Standard and Enhanced. It is vital to understand the different levels in order to ensure employees are properly screened.
What is a DBS Check?
An employer or individual can request a basic DBS (detailed background check) to verify that the applicant has not been convicted of a crime. This is the lowest-level check that is available to both individuals and employers who live in the UK. A basic DBS will verify a person’s criminal history, convictions, cautions, and other information from the Police National Computer.
Employers of all kinds, including construction and hospitality, may request a basic Disclosure to check the criminal records of a candidate to help them determine if they can hire. You may require a more detailed DBS check for some roles.
What is a DBS check standard?
Employers conduct a standard DBS Check on applicants in order to make sure they are fit for the position. This level shows information about all warnings, cautions and reprimands. It will also display any unreported convictions that a person has in England or Wales as well as those in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
For lawyers, accountants, or other high-ranking positions, the Standard DBS check must be completed. This checks to ensure that no previous offences such as fraud, financial misconduct, have been committed by employees or candidates.
What is an enhanced DBS-check?
This level, similar to the standard DBS, is only available for employers. They will need to request it on behalf of their applicant. An enhanced DBS Check includes all information from a standard DBS.
An employer can request to check if a potential or existing employee is on either the Children’s Barred List of Adult First List. This checks that candidates are not prohibited from working with vulnerable populations. It can be requested only if the employee or candidate will be engaging in regulated activities. An Enhanced Background Check is required for almost all roles in education and healthcare.
