More from James Ducker

United began the process of restructuring parts of the club during Solskjaer’s reign and in March formally appointed Murtough as football administrator and Fletcher as technical director.

Old Trafford insiders believe those two appointments especially will be crucial in helping to navigate the coming weeks and months as they attempt to stop the rot and galvanise the club’s prospects of finishing in the top four and progressing in the cup competitions.

United feel they have more robust foundations on which to build than when Mourinho departed in Dec. 2018.

Mike Phelan, who served as Solskjaer’s No. 2, and Kieran McKenna, the first team coach, are also being kept on as United seek to avoid any further disruption.

After Villarreal, United face the Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday before Arsenal visit Old Trafford four days later.
