Factors to Consider When Choosing Student Accommodation

Being a student in Leicester has many advantages. I realized the many factors involved in deciding where to live, especially since I began university.

1. Your price range is important. I had a maximum number of pounds I would spend on accommodation per month, but I also had an ideal figure (lower). When weighing your options and considering other factors, knowing how much accommodation you can afford is a great way to start to weigh the pros and cons of each option. For example, if you’re happy to stay in a shared space, you might consider getting a twin room as a way to save some money or if you don’t mind walking a bit more (or getting on public transport/cycling…) to campus, then perhaps your trade-off might be staying in student accommodation Leicester which is a bit further away.

2. Take into account the distance. For me, this was a very important consideration because I wanted to live in walking distance from certain places I knew would be frequented on a regular basis. Beyond the distance from campus, consider the exact location. For example, do you prefer to live near certain train lines? You can narrow your choices by choosing to live near campus or facilities.

3. Think about the social scene. I remember thinking about this a lot as a first year student. I decided that I wanted somewhere that was social enough (not too social, but still able to have conversations and meet new people). Some people may prefer to live in communal areas where they can be more independent. Also, it’s important to consider the size of your accommodation. The social experience will be affected by the number of students who live in that accommodation.

4. Be aware of the amenities. Each type of accommodation has its own advantages. Ranking preferred amenities is up to you. Self-catering halls, or room options, are the best choice if you’re looking to make most of your meals. A hall where meals were provided every day was the best option for me. Some halls offer shared kitchens or ensuite rooms. These are the things I considered when selecting my accommodation.

5. There are many choices when it comes to accommodation. If you are looking to meet people from other universities or have a clearer ‘divide between work and home’, there are several options. It is better to start your research early so you have time to explore all options and weigh the factors. You can then find your ideal space.

All those who are actively researching or thinking about accommodation wish you luck. If you’re like me, and have a carefully planned plan for finding the perfect accommodation, but an rushed booking process it will still work out well.
