8 Ways to Get the Most Out of Instagram

While there are new apps constantly popping up, Instagram remains a key component of a brand’s social media strategy. Certain companies are skilled at using the photo-sharing platform. Bonobos, a clothing brand for men, mixes product, production, and office shots with photographs of city life, and occasionally takes photos of events. Edelman Public Relations mixes photos of clients with quotes and graphics. Taco Bell is known for having product in their snaps, but they do it in a fun and humorous way.

You have 10 followers, 10,000 or 10, but these are tips to increase brand visibility and quality.

1. Your posts should be consistent. It’s best to not go longer than two days between posts. If you do, you may be forgotten about. It is easy to add more photos once you are established in a routine.

2. Being nice will get you noticed. You don’t all have an inbuilt fan base. You can search for hashtags related to your business. Own a pizza parlor? You can search for photos of pizzas and then ‘like’ them and leave comments. You’ll get a lot of potential fans who will love that you’re looking at them and may follow you. Are you thinking of launching your own clothing line? Complement a user’s fashion choices. You will never know what relationships may develop. Be genuine and not desperate. It is not a good idea to say “Please follow me!”

3. Outside of Instagram, edit. Although Instagram has a lot of filters, sometimes they are a little too complicated. Editing is simpler than it sounds. VSCOcam is a great editing app that allows you to control the intensity and temperature of your filter. It also includes tools to change exposure, temperature and contrast. Although this one is not easy to use, it is very useful. Instagram makes it mandatory to crop your photos into a square. Instasize allows for you to use the whole photo. Over lets you add clear type to a photo as well as stock artwork. Additional fonts, artwork and styles can be purchased. Pic Stitch and Diptic create photo collages. You can only use four photos to create collages. Your followers won’t be able to see the contents of your collages if they are too small.

4. Go outside. Your town has beautiful and interesting sites, no matter where your business is located. You should show it! This is true for your workspace, pets and co-workers. This will give your feed more variety and help you get to know your followers better.

5. Engage with your customers. Do you sell tangible products? You can create a hashtag for customers and then repost their photos. Host contests. Comments welcome.

6. Use hashtags wisely Make sure hashtags are relevant to your caption and kept to a minimum. You can add a second comment to your own photo, using multiple hashtags. It is a good idea to have this list on your phone (like in Notes).

7. Your profile should be completed. This may seem simple, but it is vital. Keep it simple and concise. Be sure to include your website. This is the only area that can be clicked.

8. Keep track of stats. Statigram is a website that allows you to keep track of your stats and view your feed. You can also search for photos right from your computer. You can analyze the analysis to determine when your followers are most active, and which posts are performing best.

Focus on one thing, but keep your mind open to new possibilities. You should keep trying until you find the right thing. Don’t give up if it doesn’t work. Learn from it and move forward!
