When to go to Zimbabwe on Safari

Zimbabwe is open all year. But, we will need to know what your main focus is in order to design the perfect itinerary. You can see the incredible wildlife of Zimbabwe, including antelope, wild dogs, the ‘Big Five,’ zebra and antelope throughout the year. However, they are more easily visible during certain times. This destination is still relatively new for Zimbabwe safari and therefore has fewer tourists than other African safari destinations.
Zimbabwe has a subtropical climate. Temperatures average high 30C and 87F during the summer. Winters are cooler with lower temperatures. Nighttime temperatures can drop dramatically.

When to go according to season
August -November

Zimbabwe’s dry season is the ideal time to be active around the falls, such as whitewater rafting on Zambezi. The prolonged dryness in Zimbabwe means that the game viewing is ideal. But this also means that peak travel times are possible with less accommodation. This makes it particularly hot in northern areas like Mana Pools.

December – April

This time is typically characterized by humidity, rainfall, and thunderstorms. These latter often arrive in the afternoon hours and clear. Although not ideal for all travelers the rainy season offers unique wildlife and scenery. The western regions receive less rainfall overall.

May – June

This period is marked by cooler weather, which can make it much more comfortable for some more adventurous activities. This time is more green, as the ground starts to dry out by July and temperatures start to fall in higher altitude regions.

Where to go to Zimbabwe to see…

Huge Elephant Herds

The dry season between May and October is when elephant herds congregate around the waterholes, often right in front or your lodge.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is open all year. However, it is best to visit the falls between February-May to see its peak.

Wild Dog Pups

June to August – The wild dogs will be out in force and the pups will make their way into the world in Hwange or Mana Pools.

Young Animals

The rain arrives from November to April and the bush becomes alive with young animals.
What is it like to live by experience?

Wildlife

If you’re looking for game viewing opportunities, we recommend that you visit the dry season. The wetter months offer the chance to view animals with their young making for some truly memorable sightings.

Victoria Falls

While the best time to witness the power of this natural spectacle is right after the rainy season in the months of April-May, some spray may obscure your view. You can, however, visit the low-level rock pools at the end of the dry period (October to December) and look over the edge of the falls.

Festivals

You can witness many celebrations throughout the country, which have a rich and varied culture. However, we recommend that you observe from a distance unless invited. Harare International Festival of the Arts combines theatre, music, and arts. It is very popular in May, June, and it has a wide audience. Chimanimani Arts Festival takes place in the heartland of the eastern highlands. It is a three day cultural festival.
